The box contains correspondence and documents sent to Richmal Ashbee from fans of Richmal Crompton's works, from AP Watt Ltd, London, [literary agents], from friends of Richmal Ashbee, from publishers, from theatres, from drama companies, from animation companies, from arts centres, and from clothing manufacturers, about the licensing of Richmal Crompton's works for publication and use by others; correspondence dated 1971-2003.
Some of the correspondence includes draft copies of the works for which a licence is requested, including:
- The story "William's Unlucky Day" written by Richmal Crompton. (This is a photocopy, made in c1989, of a story published in 1939.)
- A story by Tony Adler, titled "William and the Posthumous VC", dated c2003.
- A script for a musical by Iain Carnegie and Adrian Butler, titled "William! The Musical", dated 1998.
- A script for the pilot episode of an animated television programme by the television channel S4C titled "Just William", dated c2002.
- A picture book by Marion Milne and Richard Turner, titled "A Question of Grammar", dated 1993, based on the William stories.
- A script, dated 1987, for a television advert for KP Foods involving characters from the William stories.
- A sermon by Revd. Neville Marley, titled "Hidden Among the Stuff (Just William)", dated c2000.
The box also contains autographs of cast members [for the "Just William" radio plays]; autographs dated c1946. (The autographs are stored in an folder that has been addressed to Audrey Gay by Richmal Disher [also known as Richmal Ashbee]; the address is dated 1945. [It is not clear if the folder originally held something other than autographs.]) |
